Pre-Pregnancy Fertility Diet Plan for Couples
Sperm and egg quality respond to nutrition changes made 90 to 120 days in advance. If you are planning to conceive in the next six months, start now. Fertility nutrition is not just for women — men influence about half the outcome.
Non-negotiables for both partners
Folate-rich greens daily (spinach, methi, bathua, moringa); choline from eggs; omega 3 from walnuts, flax and, where acceptable, fatty fish twice a week; adequate zinc for both partners from pumpkin seeds and cashews; vitamin D3 supplementation if you are deficient; and full-spectrum antioxidants from berries, amla, turmeric and colourful vegetables. This foundation improves both egg and sperm quality within three months.
What to reduce or eliminate
Refined sugar, deep-fried snacks, alcohol, smoking, high pesticide fruits without washing, and processed meats. Manage caffeine to under 200 mg a day (roughly two small cups of coffee). Both partners should aim for a healthy BMI — extremes on either side reduce conception rates. Excessive weight training with inadequate calories and sleep also worsens sperm quality.
For women specifically
Track cycles for at least three months so you understand your ovulation window. Address any anaemia and thyroid imbalances first. Prioritise deep sleep. Include one warming spice — cinnamon, ginger or fennel — in your daily routine. Reduce endocrine disruptors from plastic bottles and cheap cosmetics. If you have PCOS, endometriosis or a history of miscarriage, an individualised plan is essential rather than any generic diet.
For men specifically
Male fertility is often the overlooked half of the equation. Sperm quality improves significantly with quitting smoking, moderating alcohol to under three drinks a week, sleeping seven to eight hours, keeping laptops off the lap, avoiding excessive hot tub exposure, and hitting zinc, selenium and vitamin C targets consistently.
